In a recent article on the Andrew Drummond site, Andrew draws attention to the activities of an expat who has joined the Thai Tourist Police as a volunteer. He tells the story of Steve Saunders, a Chiangmai expat who is “now dedicating his life to helping tourists in distress or rather foreigners in need.”

For whatever reason, a number of expats seem to get a kick out of donning the uniform, which they have to pay for themselves. They have no power of arrest and carry no arms. Maybe it is a macho thing for some expats but many volunteers do a sterling job assisting tourists and liaising with local police when foreigners have problems.

Andrew goes on to say:
